We Demand

We Demand: Text

1.) Title IX policy reform: Increase the number of Title IX officers to the proportion of students at the University.

2.) An open line of communication with Interim President Holton and her eventual successor, in conjunction with a written guarantee that the acting President will meet with student groups individually at least one time a month to discuss their demands and concerns.

a.) Increase the number of Title IX officers to the proportion of students at the University consistent with University growth, as defined by the attached article from the journal Behavioral Sciences. 


b.) Ensure all syllabi include ALL sexual violence resources offered (CAPS, SSAC, hotlines, etc.)

 
c.) Ensure that any student reporting sexual misconduct in their residence hall has the right to relocate within a month to other on-campus housing, free of charge and this policy is shared with students at the time of reporting in all cases without exception. 


d.) An external review and evaluation of the implementation of Title IX, with a focus on sexual assault policy, at George Mason from 2014-June 2019, along with a parallel and incorporated committee for student oversight. Following the completion of said review, the findings are to be made public to the entire student body by email and in a university-sponsored Town Hall.

  
e.) Regular updates, delivered to the entire student body, all faculty, and staff at the beginning of each semester, on the Sexual Assault and Interpersonal Violence Implementation Team Task Force. 


f. Host town hall gatherings and individual office hours with students, student group representatives, and faculty members to create an open dialogue with the community the Title IX office serves.

      3.) Better resources for students: 

a.) Hire a sufficient number of full-time clinicians at CAPS in accordance to International      Association of Counseling Services guidelines (IACS).


b.) Require the University to inform students of their rights and resources provided by Fairfax County at orientation or if and when a Title IX violation is reported to any mandatory reporter, and actively promote access to these resources.

c.)Invest in adequate advertising for, and increase accessibility to the following available resources on campus:

  1. STD/STI testing 

  2. Transportation services to and from centers that administer PERK kits  

  3. Student Support and Advocacy Center services

4.) Police Reform: 

a.) Require police officers to inform survivors of their right to a free Advocate, among other rights and resources stated above.


b.) Require all incidents of sexual harassment and violence be reported within 30 days to students.


c.) Host town hall gatherings and individual office hours with students, student group representatives, and faculty members to create open dialogue with the community the GMU Police serves.

5.) Create a committee of undergraduate students, graduate students and faculty to investigate and develop proposals for an opt-in restorative justice track for survivors.

6.)The immediate resignation of Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh from the George Mason University Antonin Scalia Law School. 

a.) Release any and all documents including but not limited to: emails, donor agreements, and contracts related to the hiring of Brett Kavanaugh as faculty at George Mason University.
